Gutter caps or covers have become increasingly popular. The thought of never cleaning gutters is extremely appealing, but at what cost? From a professional roofing standpoint, gutters are an intricate element of the roof system. A non functioning gutter system may allow water to back up onto the roof. If ignored, this repeated process will rot the fascia and roof deck and ultimately fail the roof system.
We have seen an increasing number of gutter cap related roof damage calls. Most are due to the types of covers that actually go under the first course of roofing. BAD IDEA! Even if installed when the roof was replaced, the expansion rate of the aluminum/steel cap versus asphalt/fiberglass shingles is different.
