Winter is one of the worst times to deal with roofing issues. This is because the cold and wet environment makes it more difficult for cleaning and repairing roofs, often requiring the help of a professional roofing contractor in the process.
It’s always good to know what you need to prepare for, though, and what the causes of these issues might be. Below are some of the most common roofing issues you might encounter during the winter months.
Water is always a roofing issue regardless of the time of year. When ice and snowmelt while on your rooftop, this exposes the entire roofing system to condensation, which can compromise some of the roof’s parts because the water can seep into areas where they shouldn’t be, and promote the growth of mold and fungi, which can weaken the structure of the roofing materials.
Condensation can form when wet snow meets a warm roof. Aside from the problems mentioned above, this can lead to other problems such as the formation of ice dams and icicles.
These ice formations are basically ridges of ice that form around the edge of your roof. These dams are formed because ice and snow that melted from the rooftop froze again when it reached the cooler portions of the roof’s edges.
The biggest issue with these ice dams is that the underlying cause for the melting is usually insufficient attic insulation and ventilation (hence the hot roof). And since these dams form just before the gutters, this means that a barricade gets formed in between the rest of the snow on your roof and the edge of the roof. So if the snow up top melts, it has nowhere else to go but inside your home.
Suppose the condensed water does melt but doesn’t refreeze into ice dams. This water will ideally flow into your gutter and out of your downspout. But what if it doesn’t, and instead refreezes as it starts to drip over the edge of your roof? Then you start forming icicles.
Icicles are a bit better than ice dams in that they won’t be blocking your gutter. But they’re still hazards to both your gutter system and to passers-by. An icicle can chip off and fall on somebody, which can result in bodily harm. And enough icicles can weigh down on your gutters and unhook them from their attachments to your roof. This is why a roofing company is usually called in to deal with them and other formations ASAP.
